Earl and Charlene Montgomery

 

Prior to accepting the Lord as their personal Savior, Earl and Charlene Montgomery spent many years in the field of country music, touring with various Grand Ole Opry stars and others of Nashville's top recording artists. They wrote such BMI award-winners as We're Gonna Hold On(written with George Jones and recorded by Jones and Tammy Wynette),One Of These Days(recorded by EmmyLou Harris), What's Your Mama's Name, Child? (co-written with Dallas Frazier and recorded by Tanya Tucker), and Loving You Could Never Be Better (recorded by Jones).

Other notable compositions have beenLet's All Go Down To Tha River, There's A Man Walking On The Water (written with Sue Richards) recorded as a duet by Johnny Paycheck and Jody Miller and also recorded by Jimmy Swaggart, John Starnes, Connie Smith and others.

Before Earl was called to preach, they wrote 71 songs for George Jones, 35 of which were singles, 15 solo songs for Tammy Wynette, 16 duet songs for George Jones and Tammy Wynette and 44 songs for Melba Montgomery. A few were 4033,  Small Time Laboring Man,  Someday My Day Will Come,  Where Grass Won't Grow,  Developing My Pictures,  Lord, You've Been Mighty Good To Me,  A Drunk Can't Be A Man,  Ship Of Love  and  Living On Easy Street.

Earl toured with Michael Landon (Little Joe on Bonanza, Little House On The Prairie and Highway To Heaven), worked with Red Foley, Cowboy Copas and the Willis Brothers on the road and on the Grand Old Opry,  played in the band with Billy Sherrill, one of Nashville's top record producers and worked with Rick Hall of Fame Recording Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. After Earl and Charlene married they toured with Melba Montgomery, The Willis Brothers, George Jones and Tammy Wynette on the road. Earl and Charlene now travel together as a country gospel/christian country duet.They have also been very successful writing songs.Earl is an ordained minister and evangelist.

Earl has written songs used in soundtracks for movies such as "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia",  "Stand By Your Man",  "Give Me Shelter"  "Concrete Cowboy",  "Cowboys Don't Cry" and others.

In January of 1997,  Earl received the Alabama Music Hall of Fame Music Creators award in Huntsville, Alabama at the Induction Banquet Awards Show.

1976saw the beginning of the Montgomery's study and preparation for their ministry.  In that year,  Earl accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Savior,  Charlene came to know the Lord in 1982.  They understood for the first time what a difference Christ can make in the lives of those who do his will.  The joy of a Christ-centered life is now apparent in all they do.

Presently,  they own and operate Mister Magic Music, BMI and Sweetwater Records and Studio in Sheffield,  Alabama., where they cut custom tapes, cds and records.

Aside from their ministires,  the busy couple enjoys Earl's favorite hobbies,  building and flying model aircraft and working with computers.  Earl also assists Charlene in her second career as a real estate salesperson.

Whether they are preaching,  singing,  writing,  recording,  or holding revivals,  the Lord is always their Master.

Some of the Montgomery's song credits are Where Grass Won't Grow(by George Jones,  Trisha Yearwood,  EmmyLou Harris and Dolly Parton),  Living For Jesus,  Praying For Jones,  and  I'm Sorry Children. Just two of their releases are the gospel songs,  We're Gonna Hold On (To Jesus) by Earl and Charlene Montgomery and Old Mose by The Wilsons and also Kenny Price.

In 1998 Earl and Charlene won The Country Gospel Music Guild's 1998 Golden Harp Award for the Country Gospel Duo.
